Burnett Heads State School is positioned near the mouth of the Burnett river. The school was established 140 years ago in 1878 to service the pilot station families who served to guide shipping into the Burnett river during European settlement. As well as serving as the port area, small crops, cane and tourism are local industries. There is an IGA shopping complex and a bridge was constructed to give direct access to the Bundaberg port area and marina.
The district was originally home to the Terebelangbunda people, who belonged to the Gurang Gurang tribe. Some archaeological evidence of this time remains in the area and the Indigenous history is reflected in art works around the school.
Student leadership is a priority at our school, once again to reflect our motto of ‘Progress through participation’. The student council represents the wider student body, while the elected school captains are expected to set an example of best practice in demonstrating the taught social emotional skills of, getting along, organisation, persistence, confidence and resilience.
Our school is a modern, spacious and well equipped state school which endeavours to provide a high quality and happy education to all students who enrol. The Australian curriculum is taught and German is the well-established Language other than English (LOTE) and is taught in years 5 and 6.
