School Uniforms and Student Dress Codes

The P&C of Burnett Heads State School resolves that it supports a student dress code policy at our school. Also it promotes the objectives of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 and in particular that it:
• Promotes a safe environment for learning by enabling ready identification of students and non-students of the school

Promotes an effective teaching and learning environment by eliminating the distraction of competition in dress and fashion at the school
• Promotes a supportive environment at the school by fostering a sense of belonging
• Fosters mutual respect among individuals at the school by minimising visible evidence of economic, class or social differences
• To provide durable clothing that is cost effective, safe and practical for our school environment.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

• The complete day uniform, as outlined in this policy document, is to be worn at all times to, from and during school.
• Any student who leaves the school grounds on an excursion or as part of a sporting, social or cultural event must wear the complete school uniform as specified. Students participating in official school photographs must also wear the complete school uniform as specified.
• Should the situation ever arise that a school uniform is not able to worn on a particular day, alternative clothing should be either plain coloured or as close to school colours as possible. Students wearing inappropriate multi-coloured clothing or which displays inappropriate slogans and pictures will, wherever possible, be provided with a school uniform for the day from the school supply. If an item of clothing is offensive and no appropriate school uniform is available, the students may be required to complete a detention or refused permission to attend a particular activity.
• Students may not wear sandals or thongs to school. If a student is injured, normal school footwear must be worn on the uninjured foot with a sandal and a sock on the injured foot.
• Polo shirt may be worn outside of shorts/skirts, except where otherwise directed for safety reasons. However, shorts and skirts must be clearly visible below shirt.
• All clothing worn must be of a length that complies with modesty and sun safe requirements.
• Cosmetic make-up is inappropriate for the school environment and must not be worn. A natural nail polish may be worn.
• Only roll on deodorant can be utilised – no spray tins.
• Hair accessories should complement school uniform colours and should not be used as simply fashion accessories.
• Shorts need to be of correct fitting, appropriate style for physical activity.
• Closed in footwear is compulsory for safety reasons and must be worn at all times, except in controlled activities where the supervising teacher deems is unnecessary (eg. Sand play)

JEWELLERY:

Burnett Heads State School understands that jewellery can be expensive and/or sentimental. Therefore we encourage students to leave all jewellery at home. However, the following pieces of jewellery may be worn at school:
• A wrist watch
• Plain sleepers or stud earrings (no attachments)
• Due to a choking hazard, chains and necklaces are strongly recommended not to be worn at school
• It is not permissible to wear a chain of any kind as a belt, attachment to a belt or similar
• Medical alert bracelets or necklaces are acceptable. Bracelets and necklaces with religious, spiritual or special reasoning may be worn following an approved letter of request to the Principal

OPERATING PRINCIPLES:

The Principal is responsible for the implementation of the Uniform Policy in a manner consistent with the Responsible Behaviour Plan. The school will contact parents of students who are repeatedly out of uniform and without a note of satisfactory explanation. The P&C will operate a scheme for good quality second hand uniforms.
